To see the Prophet ﷺ

Abu Hurayrah said that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever sees me in a dream will see me in a waking state, or it is as if he has seen me in a waking state; for the shaytan cannot take my form.”

Another time he said ﷺ:

“He who has seen me has seen something true, for the shaytan cannot take my form.”

[Bukhari och Muslim]

It is clear from these hadiths that whoever saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream has seen him for real, i.e. It was neither a nightmare nor a fantasy, but a dream come true that will be realized.

But this is on condition that he is seen ﷺ with the appearance with which he was described in the hadiths.

Ibn Sirin said about these hadiths: “If he sees him ﷺ as he looked”. [Bukhari]

It doesn’t matter in which phase of his life you see him, young or old.[1]

If a person came to ibn Sirin and said that he had seen the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, ibn Sirin would ask him to describe the person he had seen, and if the person described him wrongly, he would say: “you have not seen him”.[2]

A’sim ibn Kulaib narrates from his father who says that he said to ibn Abbas “I have seen the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, then ibn Abbas said: “Describe him to me!”

I then mentioned to him that he looked like al-Hassan ibn Ali.

Then ibn Abbas said “you have seen him.”[3]

Al Qastalani said “It does not count as seeing him ﷺ in the dream if the person did not see him as he was described when he was alive.”[4]

The scholars have said:

“It is not fitting for the one who has seen the Prophet ﷺ in a dream to ignore the dream/take it lightly, for it is either a glad tiding of something good to befall him. It may also be a warning of some evil to frighten the person who saw it or make him stay away from something. Or perhaps the dream is to inform him of something about to happen in his worldly or religious affairs.” [5]

“Whoever has seen the Prophet ﷺ in a dream has seen something tremendously good.  For example, if he sees him filling his house, it indicates that the house will be filled with barakah/blessing and other good things.  The scholars also say that seeing him ﷺ is an indication of a glad tiding, that the person will, for example, die in Islam and be united with the Prophet ﷺ at his hawd and in the paradise of the Merciful One…”[6]

From the benefits of seeing him ﷺ in the dream is that it satisfies a longing in the one who loves him  ﷺ and wished to see him.

Seeing the Prophet ﷺ happy, joyful and smiling indicates honor, status and triumph.

If you see him ﷺ angry with a sour face, it suggests hard times and problems which can possibly end in happiness.

If you see that you hear or take something from a prophet, you will receive from that prophet knowledge and joy.

It also indicates religiosity, faith and preserving al-amanah/what is entrusted.

Whoever sees him ﷺ will, after trouble, get relief or get rid of his debts. If the person is in captivity or if his country has suffered a drought, he will be showered with good and mercy.

If the one who sees him ﷺ is sick, Allah will make him well.

If he who sees him is rich, his riches will increase.

It is also said that seeing him ﷺ indicates a good end.

[al-Karmani, Khalil Shahin]

Whoever often sees the Prophet ﷺ in dreams without suffering anything negative in the dreams will live simply.

[ibn Qutayba]

Seeing Allah, His angels, prophets, the truthful/sidiqiin, sahaba, and tabi’in in a beautiful way or turning towards the dreamer is a good sign and joyful news and rahmah. But seeing them in an incomplete way suggests a flaw in the dreamer.

If you see in your dream that Allah or one of them has brought you close or made you sit in their seat, or is talking to you, or is promising you something good, it is a good news that he will be elevated in status.

If the person is suitable for a high position of power he will be assigned to it or if he is suitable for a position of teaching or judging he will be assigned to it.

It can also mean that the person is approached by the leader, the judge, the scholar, the pious or people in high positions.

If the person who sees this is a kafir he will become a Muslim, if he is a sinner he will make tawbah and if he is sick he will die.

However, if you see them in an incomplete way or they threaten/warn you or turn away from you, it can symbolize that your leader, the scholar, your parent will change or that your religion will change negatively.

Whoever is seen to resemble the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ or to be in his company or to dress with his clothes will be given a higher status and his family will be honored because of him.

However, if you see the Prophet ﷺ turn away from you or condemn you or change his mood towards you, then the person will have hardship or he will do something bad that will lead to his destruction if he does not stop.

The same applies if you see this with other prophets.

[shihab al ’Abir]

If a troubled person sees the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, things will be made easier for him.

If a person in captivity sees him ﷺ he will be released.

If he is sent to a place under siege or where there is a shortage of goods and a usurious price, the siege will be lifted and prices normalized.

This is because Allah says We have sent you [Muhammad] only out of mercy to all people. [21:107]

But Allah would not punish them as long as you [Muhammed] were among them [8:33]

If you see the Prophet ﷺ without shoes/sandals, it symbolizes that you stop saying the congregational prayer in the mosque and he tells you to go back to doing it.

If you see the Prophet ﷺ shaking your hand, you will follow his sunnah.

If you are seen to drink the blood of the Prophet ﷺ willingly, you will fall in battle and be forgiven for all your sins.

If one is seen drinking his ﷺ blood openly reluctantly, he will slander the Prophet’s family.

If you see the Prophet ﷺ giving a watermelon or any vegetable, you will be spared a hardship.

If you see him ﷺ giving you something that is recommended to eat such as rotab/semi-ripe dates or honey, it means that you will learn Quran and knowledge, the more he gives you the more you will learn.

If you see the Prophet ﷺ preaching, it means that you will enjoin the good and forbid the bad.

Whoever considers himself to be one of the prophets will enjoin good and encourage taqwa/fear of God and face adversities that will later be removed.

He who sees a prophet strike one will get what he wishes.

Whoever sees the Prophet ﷺ while he is trying to arrange to go on Hajj will be allowed to go.

If a person who is struggling financially sees him ﷺ things will be made easier.

[abu Taher]

Whoever sees the Prophet ﷺ will have relief after hardship and he will be rid of his debts.

If you are imprisoned or there is a drought, many good things and blessings will come upon you.

If you are already rich and you see the Prophet ﷺ, it means that your wealth will increase.

It is also said that seeing him ﷺ indicates a good end.

And it is said that he who is outnumbered will gain victory over his enemies

[Khalil Shahin]

If you see the Prophet ﷺ in a place, dressed up in beautiful clothes, in a good condition with a healthy and strong body, he will be better in his faith and receive many rewards, enjoy his good deeds and secure his money. If the person who sees the Prophet ﷺ in this state is insecure, he will have security in this life and the next.

If the person is in debt, Allah will release him from it.

If there is a drought, fertility and rainfall will increase.

If you see him ﷺ in the opposite of this state in the appearance of his body or that he is pale or missing some body part or that it has some defect or that he is missing teeth, then it indicates that people have a flaw in their faith in the respective place. This means that they fall short in following the religion and instead practice bid’a/innovations and take religion lightly.

If you see him ﷺ recovering from an illness, it symbolizes that the people in the respective place are getting better in their faith after being sinful before.

Seeing his ﷺ body completed symbolizes that the unity of Muslims will improve.

Seeing someone as the father of the Prophet ﷺ symbolizes that he is not a believer, as the Prophet’s father was a kafir.
